Is Earth at the Center of the Universe

Centuries ago, there was a great controversy in the science of the day because the Roman Catholic church rejected the theory that the sun, not the earth, was at the center of what was then thought to be the universe.  Today it is understood that the sun is not even at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, nor is this galaxy much less even at the center of the universe.  Those who expect that the universe is “Without God” might triumphantly point to the fact that Christians are obviously arrogant that when the earth is so tiny, so buried in the vast fabric of the universe, to think that we have any real importance is merely a fantasy of wishful thinking.

Actually, it is worse than that.

No, we may not be at the physical center of the universe, but the earth is at a center for the reason for the universe’s existence.  Mind you, it may not be the only center, but it is at least a center.  This planet is at least one of the reasons why this cosmos exists at all.

How can that claim be made, especially when this “third rock from the sun” is such a tiny grain of sand in the midst of the untrackable expanse of the heavens?  Of course, the reason revolves around not merely that the earth exists, but because of the birth in a stable.  If indeed the Creator Himself would be found as having come to walk this world as one among us, then that by itself rockets this fragment of the universe into extraordinary importance.  The fact that He would be found as a human steps far beyond evolution’s concept of humans – Jehovah of Covenant has indicated that we are of all creatures most unique – we are a visited species on a visited planet.  We have connections: we are intimately connected to the Creator.

Don’t combine this medicine with or without meals. But this is not arrogance, this is simply the message that has been revealed to us.  Obviously, the first place to find this awareness is in the Bible.  To a charge that this anthology of God’s revelation is merely a glorified novel, one area of interest are its prophecies, often an unsung hero.  For instance, there are prophecies about Babylon in Jeremiah that would seem ludicrous at the time, yet are accurately fulfilled centuries later.  There is the famous example where the Jews are able to show Alexander the Great where Daniel, long before, had predicted his coming, for which he gives the Jews a favored status in his empire.  When prophesies made hundreds of years in advance come true, they have passed beyond mere guesswork and fantasy and indicate a greater Source.

More to the point, already in Genesis is the description of the Seed of the woman Who will come and will crush the head of the serpent, although paying a penalty of His own, His death.  It is here where the Ballet of the Heavens also adds some physical reality: as described in the last blog, too many diverse streams converge precisely with each other in honor of His birth, making it very difficult to dismiss it as mere coincidence.  The Dance highlights the various roles Jesus would have, along with His victory over Satan, and the beginning of His new People/Nation of God.

The Bible is also built on back of eyewitness accounts.  John in his Gospel [1:14] says, “We beheld His glory…” and in his first letter [1:1-3], “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life – the Life was made manifest, and we saw it, and testify to it, and proclaim to you…”  Luke [1:1-4] maintains that his sources were eyewitnesses, and Peter writes (II,1:16), “For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.”  Of course, one may maintain that eyewitnesses cannot be trusted, but then that kind of attitude would decimate our legal system.

Truly, there are those who have their minds made up, simply dismissing all this and maintaining that this is not a visited planet and there is no God Who could visit anyway.  By their own choice, as previously identified, they believe that their end is simply nothingness.  For the rest of us, we are challenged to realize that for some reason, known only to the heart of Jehovah, we and our world have been extraordinarily honored and placed into the privilege of having a key place in the meaning and purpose of the Cosmos.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained,  what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?  For You have made him a little lower than the angels and have crowned him with glory and honor.  [Psalm 8:3-5]
